Outfit of the Week

Featured for this week's Outfit of the Week is Brittany, who describes her personal style as unpredictable.  Brittany is wearing a classic white blouse, but she styled it with a fun and bright colored bow.  This large bow really pops against the white and is unexpected.  She is also wearing cat-eyed styled glasses which are becoming a very popular trend.

Brittany loves to shop at thrift stores and vintage markets.  Her favorite designer is Marc Jacobs and her favorite accessory to add to an outfit is a hat.

Borough Market

One of my favorite places to go to on the weekend is Borough Market.   There are sooo many different vendors for all kinds of foods, drinks, and spices.  You can find everything from baked goods, to fresh produce, fish and meats, cheese, wine, olive oils, and a whole lot more.

Pumpkin Decorating!
There is even a gluten free bakery station that had cute little halloween cupcakes!  I couldn't help myself and had to get a red velvet one.   I opted for some fresh ground coffee since it is so cold, but if you wanted to freeze you could opt for a fresh squeezed juice or smoothie.  As you walk around you can get samples of cheeses, meats, bread and olive oil and even brownies.

Just Call Me Kate...

"Kate Middleton"
Happy Early Halloween!  Last night we went on a Halloween boat cruise that the school set up.  The cruise was around three or four hours and went down the Thames River.   We started near Big Ben and saw the London Eye, Tower of London, Tower Bridge and other pretty places light up at night.  It was wayyy to cold to stand outside on the boat, but we could still see the sights from the dance floor.

My friend Sarah and I decided to dress up in fancy "british" attire and call ourselves Kate and Pippa.  Of course I had to use my British accent last night to compliment the outfit.

We were definitely a sight to see on the tube!  It was such a fun night!

CHANEL

A new exhibit is currently in London featuring photography by Karl Lagerfeld, designer and creative director of Chanel, and styling by Carine Riotfeld, previous editor of French Vogue.  The free exhibit at the Saatchi Gallery is named "The Little Black Jacket."

There are over 100 beautiful black and white images with models, actors, singers, children and designers all wearing the same Chanel black jacket in a different way.  It is amazing that this one style has held up over all this time and still can be so versatile today.

Sarah Jessica Parker, Anna Wintour, Dakota and Elle Fanning, Kanye West, and Uma Thurman were just a handful of the big names in the photography.

The best part was they gave everyone a poster to take home with them.   Mine is already up on my wall!

Outfit of the Week

Morgan- sequin top
Morgan- peplum top
Emily- tweed skirt
I chose the outfits of the Morgans and I for the "outfit of the week" because they feature a few of the styles found on the High Street here in London.   All over Oxford Street you will see sequins, peplum tops and skirts, and tweed.   I took the girls to the trendy stores such as Zara, H & M, and Topshop.  These stores are perfect for buying clothing and accessories that follow the season's trends because you do not have to spend a fortune.   I like to invest in basics that won't go out of style in a year and buy fun new styles at stores like the ones I mentioned as well as Primark and Forever 21.

Gluten Free made easy

Eating gluten free can make life a little more complicated when I am out and about sometimes. Yesterday was a treat when I came across gluten free food in London!

The Morgans and I decided to eat at a diner in Harrods for lunch and to my surprise they had gluten free cheeseburgers!  I expected the bun to be pretty gross but it turned out to be so delicious.

Nevertheless, we  were "those Americans" eating cheeseburgers, fries, and wings and at the nicest department store in London.

Yesterday afternoon we were walking down the street and saw a really cute bakery that I was drooling over.  I then noticed they had a sign saying "gluten free muffins available now."  I obviously could not pass it by because anyone who knows me will tell you I used to have a muffin obsession....

Chocolate chip muffin was not so good,
but the raspberry/blueberry was amazing

They're Hereeee

Buckingham Palace after changing of the guards

Morgan and Morgan are here in London!  They got here Wednesday morning and we have been on the go ever since.  So far I took them to see Big Ben, the London Eye, Piccadilly Circus, Buckingham Palace, Harrods and Covent Garden.

It is so nice to have my best friends here to experience what I am doing here.  We are missing our roommate Claire though :(

Our view from the London Eye

Two more days to fit everything in before they head back to the US.  Time to do some serious shopping!

Happiness

Nothing is better than receiving mail from loved ones!  There is something so personal about receiving actual mail instead of a text or email.  It's so rare today that I get very excited when it happens.

Today I received a Halloween card from my grandparents.  They are always great about sending little holiday cards to cheer you up and put you in a good mood.

Thanks Grandmom and Pop Pop!

Fresh and Healthy

It's amazing to me how I can walk outside of my flat (apartment) and grab fresh fruit and vegetables on the street at five or more different places before I even reach the tube station.  Londoners are always picking up a basket of fruit off the street and using their reusable shopping bags.  The prices are really good too, a large box of strawberries for one pound.

Another thing I've noticed is what Londoners buy at the grocery stores compared to Americans.  In America you'll see people with tons of snack bags, frozen foods and the like, while in London people are buying lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, cheeses, meats and not so many packaged things.

The thing about not having a car and living in the city is that you walk a tonnn.  Sure there's the tube, but you still have to walk a distance to the tube station!  I guess the combination of the easy access to fresh produce, healthier grocery picks, and lots of walking explains why everyone here looks so in shape.

Exception: Their idea of breakfast.  I guess having french fries at breakfast isn't that different than having home fries?

Stonehenge and Bath Trip

Roman Baths in Bath, England
Yesterday exceeded my expectations by a lot!   I was excited to go to the ancient town of Bath and see the famous stones of Stonehenge, but I did not expect them to be that beautiful.  We first went to Bath, an ancient town built into the English valley.  We took a walking tour and saw their Abbey, Square, the Crescent and of course the ancient Roman Baths.  This area is very old and maintains that feeling but it also has lots of good stores and restaurants.  I wish we could've had longer their but I'm glad I got to spend a few hours in this gorgeous place.

On the way to Stonehenge there was a rainbow that remained there for few hours, even as we took pictures of the stones.  I got some amazing pictures, but they do not  do these beautiful places justice.

Pub Crawl

Last night we went on a "Hidden Pubs of London" tour that the school set up for us.  Only here would the school set up a club night and a pub crawl to welcome us.  I have to say last night was one of my favorite nights here so far.  Our tour guides took us to three pubs in the exclusive Mayfair area so we could get out of the main tourist areas we have apparently been going to.

It was a little uncomfortable when we walked in the first pub with a bit of an older and exclusive crowd.  It only took about 30 seconds for them to realize that most of us were Americans and we were on a tour.  Let's just say we were a little out of place.

The night ended at a great pub with live music that started off with "Sweet Home Alabama."  Needless to say all 30 or so of us started going crazy.

It's Official!

I have finally booked my trips for this semester and as of now I will be going to Barcelona, Paris, and Ireland!  It is more stressful than you think to plan trips but I at least have my transportation planned.   Now it's time to look up all the amazing things I can see in these cities!

As for now I am soaking up all of London!

Scooting to School

I don't know about everyone else, but I know that when I was in elementary school I rode the bus.  What do the kids in London do?  Ride a scooter!  Not only that but their parents push them so that they make it on time.   I've also seen kids on scooters going down the aisles in the grocery stores.  It looks like fun and I'm starting to miss my razor scooter days.

Note to Self

Do not order a macchiato in London unless you are at Starbucks.  I ordered one at a random cafe and this is what they gave me...

A dixie cup half full of cream was not what I was expecting!  I will stick to the lattes for now.

Outfit of the Week!

Every Sunday Travel and Trenches will feature one outfit from a fellow student that is eye catching and fabulous.

Here is our first Outfit of the Week!  Christina looked street chic this weekend in her skirt, knee socks, pea coat and scarf.  She describes her personal style as fun, creative, expressive and always evolving.  She really loves accessories, especially necklaces, because you can add them to a simple tee or throw on a dainty one to add to your outfit.  Her favorite store is urban outfitters.

Harrods

I almost feel as if Harrods is a museum because everything is so beautiful, elegant, and expensive.  The difference is you can touch everything in Harrods and dream of buying things in there.   The store is so massive that it can take your hours to go through!

We opted for the ice cream parlour and had a hugeee sundae that was devoured.  The most expensive ice cream I've ever had... 15 pounds.

You know you're a fashion merchandising major when...

...you decorate your room as if it were a store.   I was looking around at how I arranged all of my accessories in my room and I thought...wow I am displaying my stuff as if it was in a boutique.  I guess this is part of what I am getting for my degree!  At least it looks neat...

What I like about organizing my accessories as well my clothing is that I can see everything.  Having your stuff displayed makes it so much easier to put things together when you're in a rush.

London Latte

I used to hate coffee, but it has really grown on me in the last year.  It wasn't because of the taste, but because of the need for caffeine at times like finals and my internship.  The taste is finally growing on me after trying different kinds.  Thank God because with 8:30 am classes I definitely need it to stay awake all day!

I had a great latte at a place right school.  The best part is they have a card which they stamp each time you order a hot drink and after you purchase six you get a free one.  I am all about the frequent customer discounts!

First Day of Class!

Classes started today!  My schedule here is unlike mine at home for so many reasons.
1) It's only a ten week term
2) I'm only taking 4 classes but apparently that is a large course load here
3) For 3 of my classes we meet once a week but for 4 hours
4) Classes only on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday
5) Going on field trips!
